CNC Turning – operating principle

This method has for several years enabled Sacher to produce parts and components with the most complex shapes. This machining process is characterized by very high precision and speed, because we use CNC machines, which are computer-based numerical control systems. Based on the three-dimensional models prescribed for the components, the Sacher staff design tool movement paths on a metal surface (or any other material) and the process itself is fully automated. This guarantees not only the highest quality, but above all the repeatability that cannot be achieved with a conventional lathe.

Machining of small parts is very difficult. It requires sufficient precision, preparation and experience. Therefore, computer-controlled numerical devices are being used for this purpose more and more frequently. CNC turning guarantees flawless and accurate machining in a record-breaking short time. For this reason, it simply could not be omitted from our offer. We invite you to take a look at our offer of turning-related services..

How do turning services work?

The basis of our proposed method is very similar to conventional turning. A significant difference is the integration of a computer into the process. CNC turning therefore requires better preparation and programming knowledge. At the very beginning, the item must be designed in the CAD engineering software. It is then processed into a CNC lathe control plan. The operator’s only task is to attach the material, write a program and set the zero point and then supervise the process.

With the aid of machining, almost any workpiece can be made on lathes. The most common types are shafts and bushes, but also gears, threads, rings, bearings, gears, the bolts and pistons. Precision turning creates elements with precise gouging and dimples, as well as meticulous details. In addition, the process allows the surface quality to be determined in terms of its roughness.

How does a CNC lathe work?

We use only high-quality tools for our work. These include a multi-axis number lathe with a PLC logic controller. It is used, as the name implies, to control a closed loop machine. This allows for real-time corrections of the moving parts of the lathe. As such, errors are not possible. A CNC lathe can also be used to produce the same project repeatedly without making any changes. This is especially useful when creating components designed for large series.

What types of materials are worked on using lathe tools?

Chip processing is ideal for a variety of metals. These include i.e. stainless steel, construction steel, austenitic steel or heat-resistant steel, but also aluminum and alloys. The CNC metal lathe can also handle cast iron and brass. There are almost no limits in this respect. This is why it is often used in heavy industry, which requires truly reliable and robust solutions.

CNC turning of stainless steel is only part of what professional machines can do. They are even used for the machining of plastics. These include thermoplastic composites and thermosetting composites. What about softer materials? You can also trust our machines in this matter. They are even suitable for shaping wooden blocks.

As such, in practice there are very few restrictions. Turning brass and many other materials is definitely achievable. Depending on the raw material, we adjust the machine parameters to get the best results with as little wear as possible.

Precise turning types and parameters

Working on turning machines is not a uniform process. Several parameters must be defined in order to create various components. Only in this way will the product perform its function. What is specifically determined before the device starts working? The most important thing is the rotational and cutting speeds. The depth of cut, as well as the feed and speed must be determined as well. Time, strength, moment, process power are also important. Without these parameters, aluminum CNC turning does not produce the desired results.

The way it works is one thing. The choice of a processing mode is also important. We can distinguish the following types of metal turning:

– lateral,
– longitudinal,
– conical,
– contouring.

On top of this, there is also drilling, tapping and knurling. As you can see, a CNC-controlled lathe is a very versatile machine that helps produce very detailed components.

The uses of CNC metal turning in various industries

Our service is available to anyone who needs high quality products. However, there are industries where metal turning is particularly popular. Architecture and construction industries are perhaps the best examples. They need a variety of screws, nuts, sprockets, gears, axles and many other elements. The best way to get them is by using a lathe. Manufactured parts make building stable structures possible.

The same is true for the automotive industry, which has a high demand for precise vehicle parts. In order to ensure safety, vehicles must be made using high-quality components. Agriculture is also a good example. CNC turning is necessary to make parts for machines used for working in the fields and tending livestock.

Advantages of metal turning

The main advantages of this method include a level of precision that is unattainable in other machining methods. In addition, the details produced in this way can be infinitely reproduced. CNC metal turning is therefore particularly well suited for large-scale production. However, it is often used to create individual elements. In both cases a reduction in production costs and waiting time can be expected. A machine works much faster than a person. In addition, it can also save some of the material that is being worked on.
